The Safety at Work Ordinance [New Version], 5730-1970 sets two separate intervals, and confusing them is the common reason a plant finds out late that its inspection has lapsed. Section 81: a lifting machine and all of its parts must be thoroughly examined at least once every fourteen months, by a certified inspector. Section 75: chains, ropes and lifting tackle in use must be examined at least once every six months, also by a certified inspector. The definition of a "lifting machine" in section 79 names a crane and a winch explicitly, so overhead travelling cranes, jib cranes and electric hoists fall inside it. This is the floor the law sets; whether a particular machine at your plant needs more is a question about your site, not about the law.

The inspection does not end with the visit. Section 119A of the Safety at Work Ordinance requires the certified inspector to deliver a report on the results to the occupier of the plant within 14 days of the examination, and requires that report to be attached to the plant register within 20 days of the examination. A plant whose inspections were carried out on time but whose reports are not in the register is still not compliant — and this is the easiest duty of the set to miss, because everything else looks in order.
